Kate’s biography
- Kate is a proud North Londoner, and the first Black woman Labour MP for Edmonton
- She comes from a family of Nigerian immigrants who came to London in the 1960’s.
- Her family, and upbringing during the 80s shaped her values, and she worked for the NHS, and later as a Practice Manager in a Enfield surgery, working 24/7 to get free healthcare for all.
What has Kate done for Edmonton?
Since becoming an MP Kate has been very active campaigning for you. In Edmonton and in Parliament she has:
- Kate is a vocal member of the All party group on Knife crime, taking Ministers to task about school exclusioncalling for an urgent overhauling of the schools system, including an end to part-time education for excluded pupils, and for mainstream schools to be more accountable for the children they exclude.
- As Chair of the Nigeria APPG Kate has led on debate on modern day slavery.
- Kate has spoken out on the forced academisation of all schools.
- Been a critical part of the campaign to ensure her constituent Anthony Bryant was not deported. She has also been a big voice on the Windrush Scandal, taking up cases for local residents and challenging Ministers in Parliament to end the ‘hostile environment.’

Kate is the Labour and Co- operative MP for Edmonton and sits on the International Development Select Committee
In 2014 Kate was elected on as a member of the National Executive Committee for the Labour Party and in 2016 was appointed by Rt Hon Jeremy Corbyn to sit on the National Executive Committee as a Shadow Cabinet representative.
Kate has served as a Labour MP for Edmonton since 2015 and successfully won re-election as Edmonton’s MP in 2017 and 2019 general elections.
Kate holds a degree in Third World Studies from University of East London. Before being elected as an MP in 2015, Kate worked as a GP Practice manager at an Enfield surgery, Kate is a trustee of a women’s charity based in Enfield which helps people cope with economic disadvantage.
In September 2015 Kate was appointed Private Parliamentary Secretary to Jeremy Corbyn MP, the then leader of the Official Opposition party. Kate has also served as a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education and Petitions Committee from September 2015-June 2016.
